I saw this clip from Ricky Gervais’ Extras this morning and it really made me laugh and also reminded me that once, a long time ago, Rocky Gervais was actually funny.
For those who don’t know Extras was what he made after The Office. It’s about a comedian who gets a break when the sitcom he wrote and stars in gets mildly popular. In this clip he explains it very well: in chasing fame/ratings it is going for cheap laughs.
It’s interesting to reflect on the fact that Gervais, in chasing fame, went from making fun of himself and being actually funny, to punching down at babies and repeating the one joke about trans people.
Little fat man who sold his soul,
Little fat man who sold his dream…Pathetic little fat man,
No one’s bloody laughing,
The clown that no one laugh’s at,
They all just wish he’d die.
Ricky Gervais predicted his own faith back then.
